Akamatra is on the north side of Ikaria. It is the biggest village in the Messaria area.
Messaria (which is a combination of messa and area) means the area that is in the middle of the island.
Now, with the roads that are built, Akamatra is almost 5 km from Evdilos port and 26 km from Agios Kirikos.
For 4 centuries Akamatra was the capital of Ikaria. At that village took place many meetings of the elders, and that is why a Court was built in that area.
During the centuries of Ottoman rule, the capital of the village was made the headquarters, where on the upper floor were the offices and on the ground floor were the prisoners kept.
