Ikaria is the island...that is eagerly waiting for September to come ...the reason is that the locals wait patiently for the Autumn season so the grapes on their fields are ripe enough to become wine.

In Ikaria, it is rumored that the god Dionysus was born, the god of joy, pleasure, fest...and wine...As a prehistoric place of worship for the god of fun and pleasure, the locals grew on their fields, many different varieties of grapes, so they could enjoy wine that had different colors, aromas, and tastes during their fests.

The fertile soil of the island, and the special and diverse morphology of this soil, are the reason why the local wine has a special taste, aroma, but also texture. Due to Ikaria’s climate, the grapes on the fields usually ripen and they are harvested the first 10 days of September onwards, but also throughout September. The producers monitor their fields almost daily, and only when the bunches are ripe, do they proceed to the harvest.

The attendants of this activity will have the opportunity and pleasure to take part in the harvest of the grape fields. The fields are located on the south side of the island, close to Xilosirti village, in a dream location called Kamba.

At Kamba, the fields grow grapes up to 200 years ago. In Kamba, the local farmers, the harvest is done manually.

This means that the main tools for the harvest are scissors or knives. The grape bunches, after being whole cut, are placed in special plastic baskets. Then they are transferred to the special store where the grinding takes place, to collect their juice which eventually and finally becomes wine.

Singing, laughing, and working together with the locals of the island, you will take part in one of the oldest activities of the Greek tradition and culture.

Afterward, you will have the opportunity to sit with the locals, eat and talk with them, and also taste last year’s wine.
